Robert Matthews began his music career in the 1980's with the bands: The Fabulous Dodgey Bros or Hells Bells with: John Shelley, Bruce Gain, and Brett Reid, Replacements: Craig T Foster, Trevor Dare and Chris Lowe. Extreme Blues with original members: Kent Jackson and Danny Davidson with guests including Glen Hone, Robert 'Bobby Sox' Matthews, T.K., Bob Spencer, Steve 'Mac' McLennan, Steve 'Duke' Earl, Peter Houlihan, Chris Lowe, Craig Rosevear, Steve Fuller and George 'Chookie' Cotsioucos.
In the 1990's Robert Mathews played bass guitar with: In The Red with Murray Roach, Don Soper, Danny Jackson, Ismit Osmanovic, Trevor Dare, Craig T Foster, Rob Bell and George Chook. He played in the Newcastle bands: No More Crime with Paul Elliot and Chris Lowe.
He played bass guitar in Yiante. Members of Yiante included: Ian Sandercoe: vocals and guitar, Paul Elliot: guitar and vocals (was replaced by Ngariki), Craig Lancaster: drums (was replaced by Chris Lowe and Mac Mclennan in August 1997), Robert Matthews: bass (was replaced by Dave Carter), Josh Callaway replaced Tony Heaney on keyboards. Bobby Sox played bass guitar on the album Earthday and Bloodfire at Karmick Hit Studio Drummoyne, produced by Ian Sandercoe and Rob Parde and engineered by Tim Powell. Bloodfire was recorded over six days. The album made its way to London, and was used as pre-show music for Dein Perry's Tap Dogs.

Yiante has performed with Deborah Conway, Jenny Morris, Tall Tales and True, Silverchair, Merril Bainbridge, Armi, Loving Helena, Silent Scream, Maree Hawker, Boom Crash Opera and Steve Gibson.
